FOR GRANDMA

This mural is a partial tribute to my grandmother (my American side), who was from upstate New York. Although this mural is painted in York, PA, I  felt it to be regionally close enough and share the same wildlife. My grandmother loved cardinals, and I always remember all the cardinal decorations everywhere in my grandparents house. I always wanted to paint one for her, so this seemed like the perfect opportunity.

In the mural there is a "red rising sun" which is to subtly represent my other grandmother (my japanese side) who is still with us to this day.

The rest of the mural is abstract, creating a colorful playfulness. I had a loose idea of what the mural would look like, but I just made it up as I went and just had fun playing around. But, this was intended to give the mural dimension, movement, and also create a "pattern" like feel when the viewer is up close. From afar, the bird(s) appear calm looking out over the chaos, sort of like how our mothers and or grandmothers look out for us in a crazy world.

This mural was approximately 30’x40’ painted using spray paint.
